Flying Squid & Black Dog

After almost two weeks in Dunedin we have found a couple of hang outs that are very fun! First, living in a hostel is like living in the dorms again, so any excuse to get out is a good one. And any excuse that involves food, drink and cheap fare- all the better! Emrys has been on a hunt for fish and chips since we landed on the island and was pointed to the Flying Squid by a fellow classmate. So he digs out the phone book to try to find it, but alas – it’s not listed. So yesterday we’re out walking around and there’s a flashing red neon sign, like a signal from the fried food angels and what do you know- right there across the street from campus is Flying Squid. A little hole in the wall place with about 8 barstools mounted to the floor next to a counter top and a chalkboard menu. So Emrys got his fish and chips and a burger and chips for me- all for less than NZ$8 (US$5.50). There’s nothing like a brown bag full of fried potato to satisfy a growling tummy. It was great!

A couple nights ago we decided to take the cribbage board and cards over to a coffee house/café/bar type of place we’d walked by a dozen times but never stopped into. They have large overstuffed chairs and couches and tables around, dim lighting and fairly quiet. One side, facing the sidewalk is the coffee bar, and the other side, adjacent to the coffee bar, is the liquor bar. Kind of a funky place but the BEST latte I’ve had in a long time (no offense Jill). Their hot drinks are served in “cup” or “bowl”. So of course having to check this out Emrys orders a bowl of hot chocolate. He ended up with a steaming soup bowl of liquid chocolate- his was really good too! So I think we’re going to have to visit the Black Dog again tomorrow night to markthe end of the first week of class!

SO I'm totally jealous. But, the key things I noticed are 1) Where are the pics of the neon sign from the Fish and Chips Angels? We need more divine sinage in our lives! and 2) It's really exciting to see your hair growing in so nicely, Sara!
